Replace those spot welds on the firewall of your Subaru Impreza, WRX or STI, quickly and painlessly
2008-2011 Impreza, 2008-2014 WRX AND STI
(GR, GV, GH, GE) Firewall Spot Welds
The Problem
Weak Firewall + Small Diameter Spot Weld = No bueno :(
The 2008-2011 Impreza, 2008-2014 WRX and STI (GR, GV, GH, GE) firewall is extremely thin. There probably was a reason Subaru made it this way, but it is hella inconvenient/annoying when they start squeaking, and downright dangerous when it fully fails.
The clutch and brake pedal assembly is mounted onto a bracket that is spot welded onto the thin firewall in 6X 5mm diameter spot welds. While the spot welds themselves are mostly good, and do not break at the welded joint, the thin firewall will get small 5mm diameter holes ripped off along with the welded joint through use of the clutch pedal. Forgive us for using our cars as intended Subaru (just kidding, I love you, please don't blow up on me)!Diagnosis

The diagnosis of this problem is very well documented. This NASIOC thread has a plethora of information on diagnosing the issue. https://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2700583

Fixes Up Until Now
Not Pleasant
Same link has this information as well: https://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2700583
Here are the common fixes and the downsides of them:
- Brace the firewall into high heaven: There are about 65,000 braces available on the market to combat this firewall issue. The common combination of braces is known as the TRIFECTA: clutch, brake master cylinder braces, and pedal assembly braces. While many cars have all 65,000 braces installed, the firewall still failed on them. The only way to fix the problem is to go to the failure point and brace the failure point - not these band-aid solutions (which cost a pretty penny, EACH). The band-aid solutions only brace the firewall locally at where they are located, not at the spot welds. The force applied to the spot welds, exerted by the master cylinder upon clutch opening, is identical no matter how much you brace the master cylinder.
- Rivets: Drill out spot welds and replace with rivets-yikes. Some people use "structural" rivets and buy expensive tools to install them. Many are not comfortable with their clutch and brake pedal being held on with rivets, however structural they may be. There have been documented cases of failed rivets as well.
- Good old nuts and bolts with a large flat washer: Old-fashioned nuts and bolts, and a large washer to try to spread the load over a larger area on the spot weld. However, this method means you have to either remove the dash so you can access the inside of the hardware assembly, or you'd have to use exactly 89 universals and bleed a quart of blood to achieve what you want. Not to mention all the money you need to put into the swear jar along the way. Working in the dark, upside down, with half your body twisted like a gymnast is not how a perfect Saturday afternoon should be spent.
- Weld that F*&ker: Some people end up hating the other solutions so much that they remove the dash trim pieces, blanket half of all the interior of the car, remove all the paint from around the spot welds and firewall, and weld the bracket onto the thin firewall. Welding onto thin sheet metal is a risky move, and not everyone wants to spend even longer prepping, grinding, welding, cleaning, and painting for hours on end when the end result doesn't even yield you a single pony. This is an overkill solution that is not needed, you are better off spending your cash and time on something else.
- Pay A Shop to Do it: Of course you can pay someone else to do the job for you, the estimated time for the job is 10 hours (quoted straight from Subaru), at about $100-$150 an hour, that's a new turbo/meth kit/set of tires right there!!
The Solution
Simple
Using a drilled fastener with built in sockets, you can "fish" the fastener through the inside of the car, without ever removing the dash or any piece inside the car, keeping all the dash-retaining tabs intact.
No one want to spend hours doing this job. The kits offered allows you to do this in 1-2 hours, and you can get back to doing what do you best: researching, buying and installing more car parts.
How It Works
1Inspect and Drill
Drill out spot weld from exterior of the car.
2Go Fishing
Insert wire into interior of the car, attach the drilled hardware to the wire.
3Secure and Live Happily Ever After
Simply pull the hardware into the drilled hole in the firewall, and secure using hex key and torque nut to spec, all from the outside of the car.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Will this fix my clutch squeak?
There are two known "failure" points on GH, GE, GR and GV Chassis' clutch pedal that causes the squeak/clicks/squeals:
- Support tube on the clutch and brake pedal assembly itself. There is a tube that houses the rod which transfers the force from your foot to the clutch master cylinder. This particular tube has a weak point around one of the welds that over time will develop a fracture due to fatigue. A updated clutch and brake pedal assembly will fix this. The ITS pedal support will also support the assembly to help prevent future failures of this particular kind.
- The spot welds on the firewall. This is the failure that this kit is useful for. You've probably read about this already, but if not, the "Explanation" section above shows the way to inspect your car for this failure.
2. I already have the XX, YY, ZZ braces! Do I really need this?
The braces commercially offered do not move the force required to actuate the clutch master cylinder away from the spot welds.
The master cylinder braces only brace the master cylinders, but it does not remove any force from the spot welds.
The pedal assembly brace will prevent the support tube failure mentioned above, but does not prevent spot weld breaks detailed on this site.
The spot welds themselves will only be helped by replacing the spot welds, either through ways mentioned on this site, or with the Humble Rumble spot weld replacement kit.
3. Is it really that easy?
Yes!
The kit will save you many hours of frustration, hours you could be spending trying to source what you see here then fiddling with them when you finally receive them, hours you could be spending at work making some extra money, or hours you could be spending with your significant other to make up for ditching them last week to work on your car, or hours you could be spending researching, contemplating, ordering, installing, and enjoying other car modifications.
Everyone's time is worth something, whether it's directly monetary, or just spending some time to relax with the ones you love. For that, I don't think the kit is asking too much.
4. Why would I buy this kit? It looks like a bunch of nuts and bolts from the hardware store.
The hardware offered in the kit are not simply nuts and bolts from the hardware store. They are specialized hardware that would be tough to find/procure, spec'd to withstand environmental and physical conditions, tested through many installs and over thousands of kms of use, assembled in a controlled environment with industrial products and procedures. Included with the hardware kit is a step-by-step instruction manual, and someone that will be available to answer your install questions and provide tips. There is more than meets the eye.
5. It looks like something I can source myself!
Yes - if you have the time and expertise to spec the appropriate parts to withstand the environmental and physical conditions, and can source from a reputable supplier in a reasonable quantity for a reasonable price. Whether this commercially-available kit is for you depends on how much you value your time, how much you value experience/expertise in the matter, how much you value having support to do the fix, and how much fiddling around you want to do yourself. I can tell you buying the bits and pieces yourself won't save you more than an hour's work at minimum wage. I don't want to sound like a broken record, but everyone's time is worth something.
6. Can this be installed proactively to prevent the issue, or only after the fact?
The kit can be used proactively. Once one spot weld fails, the subsequent ones fail exponentially faster due to higher load on the remaining spot welds. The kit will still work when no spot welds are left, there have been many customers that have successfully utilized the kit when no spot welds remain, as long as the position of the internal bracket is relatively in the original position, and you can still use your clutch (even if just occasionally), the kit should work well for you.
